At St.Tiernan’s College we emphasise Art, Craft and Design to both our Junior and Senior Cycle. The Art, Craft and Design syllabus allows students to create Fine Art, Craft and Graphic Design artefacts.
All three inter-dependent disciplines together are used to create a well rounded and holistic learning experience for our students
Art emphasises a variety of ideas, the physical feelings towards the subject matter and the overall visual and aesthetic qualities of the artwork.
Craft emphasises the correct and safe application of tools and materials selected and used to create the artwork.
Design
emphasises the planning process, manipulation and juxtaposition of images, problem solving, realisation and completion of the artwork.

Our aims of Art, Craft and Design are to:

  • Provide learning experiences which develop the student’s aesthetic and artistic skills, confidence and practice along with art, craft and design appreciation
  • Develop the student’s awareness to the historical, social, personal, economic, and cultural importance of art, craft and design.
  • Develop students to critically analysis themes and to build a body of creative work through experimentation and realisation through art, craft and design
  • Encourage the student to develop an enquiring and informed attitude to their environment and to enable them to relate to society through art, craft and design
  • Develop and enhance the student’s ability to appreciate, response, evaluate, enjoy, value, create, and communicate through visual art and design
  • Develop the student’s individuality and self-esteem through artistic achievement
