St. Tiernan’s College Healthy Living Week

The SPHE Dept. of St. Tiernan’s College ran a successful Healthy Living Week from October 12 to Friday 16 2009. This year the focus was on the entire person rather than the healthy eating focus from last year. Lorraine McHale, SPHE Co-ordinator, said that the department decided to run the week this year on a larger scale, due to the positive feedback which was received from last year.
The Samaritans came in to give a talk on mental health and An Bord Bia gave a fantastic demonstration on healthy tasty dishes that were quick and easy to prepare. Both visits went down really positively with the students.
Donal Hennigan, with the help of other staff members, ran a fantastic daily lunchtime basketball league for each year group. Students thought this was great fun,so much so, that similar events will be run monthly from now on.
The school shop introduced a wider variety of healthy snacks such as cereal bars, yoghurts and milk for selling. This tied in well with the ban imposed on crisps in the school, promoting healthy eating and snacking.
The 3B group prepared a Healthy Eating ‘Good Grub Guide’ This was a cookery booklet, giving healthy, easy to prepare dinner favourites such as beef stew and bacon and cabbage to name but a few. It was well prepared and all the boys involved said that they enjoyed the process.
The SPHE Dept. said that they can’t wait for next year when they will be making it bigger and better again for the students to enjoy.
