Music Programme at St Tiernan’s College
The music project has proved a popular aspect of the cultural programme provided at St Tiernan’s College for the past number of years.
This is an after-school project organised by Mr Colm Hendry under the tutelage of well known local musician, Mr Dennis McCalmont. In these classed students learn to play guitar, drums, keyboards and partake in percussion and rhythm sessions.
Having mastered these instruments the group are coached in the fundamentals of playing together as part of a band and in how to back the vocalist properly.
Performance then becomes the focus of the group where stagecraft is discussed and the band engages in a number of gigs before an audience. A further aspect of this is the visit to theatres to watch performances from top-class professional artists. Recently our music group enjoyed a tremendous performance of the musical “We Will Rock You” in the O2 Arena, Dublin.
Other classes have focused on the art of songwriting and our most accomplished musicians have spent time in a recording studio where they have recorded a number of tracks onto CD.
The music project continues to grow in popularity and with its range, diversity and value for money it is not difficult to see why this is so.
