S.C.P.
Our school is part of the School Completion Programme (S.C.P.). The programme is a Department of Education and Science initiative that aims to have a positive impact on school retention for young people at risk of early school leaving. It takes preventative and supportive approaches to ensure students successfully complete the senior cycle.
S.C.P provides various in school, after school and holiday supports including the following:
The programme aims to improve attendance by providing positive experiences of the education system, improving the school climate, encouraging creativity and providing other specific interventions to individual students depending on their needs.
Lunch Club
All students are members of the lunch club and each receive a sandwich, drink (water/orange juice) and a piece of fruit daily, free of charge , funded by the DEIS initiative.
Evening Study
Evening study is available for students four evenings a week from 3.50-5.50 pm.
It is fully supervised and provided free of charge.
Home School Liaison Officer
We also now have the support of a Home School Liaison Officer which we see as an invaluable source of help and support between home and school.
Summer Camp
During the month of June we run the St. Tiernan’s College Summer Camp for potential first year students. All sixth class students are welcome to attend, free of charge. A wide range of activities are organised e.g drumming workshops, arts and crafts , fun cookery classes and various sports. It is a great way for future classmates to meet (some for the first time )in a fun environment. They also have another chance to meet some of their teachers and familiarise themselves with the school buildings before school begins in August. We are hoping to run the summer camp again this year.
HOME TUITION
Home tuition is available to students in certain circumstances. Funding for tuition is availed of through the S.C.P. In the future ,as the programme progresses we see support being offered not just within the school but after school and during holiday time through various extra curricular activities in recognition of the fact that continuous support must be given to young people and in keeping with the S.C.P. ethos
